Methodology

Compensation figures are drawn from IRS Form 990 / Schedule J, the annual information return tax-exempt organizations file. Total compensation combines base pay, bonus and incentive pay, retirement and other deferred compensation, and nontaxable benefits. For each executive we use their highest reported year at a given organization, joined to that organization's most recent filing with data for name, state, and category.

We exclude aggregate "group return" rows that report a consolidated figure rather than an individual person, and limit the state ranking to states with at least five reported executives. Figures lag by one to two years and reflect the filing organization, which may be a system parent rather than a single hospital or clinic.
