An Employer Identification Number (EIN) is the unique nine-digit identifier the IRS assigns to every business and nonprofit organization — the organizational equivalent of a Social Security number. It is usually written in the format 12-3456789. For nonprofits, the EIN is the key that ties together all of an organization's IRS filings: its Form 990s across years, its tax-exemption determination, and any related schedules. Because organization names change, merge, or duplicate, the EIN is the reliable way to look up a specific nonprofit. On 990Health, every organization page is keyed to its EIN (e.g. /org/123456789), so you can reliably find a specific hospital or health nonprofit even if several share similar names.
EXAMPLE
To find a specific nonprofit hospital's filings, search by its EIN (e.g. 04-2103594) rather than its name, which may be shared by affiliated entities.
